Rubber Stamping by Stephen Fowler
In December 2016 we ran a stall at the very wonderful and inspiring Hastings Illustration Festival. The best thing about taking part in an event like HiFest is that you get to see brilliant artwork and illustration by the other exhibitors. In amongst the stalls we found artist and illustrator Stephen Fowler and his wondrous book about the art of rubber stamping. The book is worth having just to look at and enjoy, even if you don’t actually want to do any of the practical stuff inside – there are examples of work by some amazing artists, such as Jeremy Deller, Rob Ryan, Natsuko Oshima and Zeel. However, if you’re after exciting new ways of making images then there are lots of easy to follow instructions on printmaking. The techniques demonstrated in the book cover everything from printing edible images on to cake icing to faking Bigfoot’s tracks. The book has clearly been very carefully put together over two years, with most of the illustrations and diagrams made by the author with his own stamps.
Rubber Stamping is published by Laurence King and there are lots more pictures of the book, plus some interesting thoughts on the content by the author on his blog.
Stephen will be running a rubber stamp passport project at Bristol Artists Book Event (BABE) at Arnolfini, Bristol, 1st-2nd April 2017. He is also making a limited edition rubber stamp book for Craig Atkinson at Café Royal Books, which will also be launched at BABE. He will be running workshops with The Idler on the 22nd April.
Lucy bought the book for me as a Christmas present and Stephen very kindly stamped the book with some of his stamps as well as writing a personal message.
